On April 2nd, the United Nations Population Fund Seoul Representation Office (UNFPA SRO) welcomed the Senior Deputy Director Park and Assistant Director Yeom from the International Statistical Cooperation Division of Statistics Korea (KOSTAT). The meeting reaffirmed the strong and longstanding partnership between the two organizations and opened new avenues for fruitful collaboration in 2025.
The meeting focused on presenting the 2025 Joint Work Plan between UNFPA SRO and KOSTAT, with particular emphasis on advancing demographic resilience. Key initiatives included preparations for the 2025 Global Symposium, as well as the development of the third phase of the UNFPA-KOSTAT Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The conversation underscored the mutual commitment to data-driven strategies that align with both national and global demographic agendas.
Participants also exchanged their insights on the upcoming Brisbane Population Conference scheduled for this July and shared perspectives on the current demographic situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), reflecting the broad scope of regional demographic cooperation.
The meeting marked a significant step forward in strengthening collaboration between UNFPA SRO and KOSTAT. Both parties committed to deepening their cooperation to address critical demographic challenges, including population ageing, low fertility, and gender inequality. The discussions bloomed a fruitful basis for future collaboration and impactful efforts in 2025 and beyond, further enhancing KOSTAT’s engagement with UNFPA’s global mandate on population, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence.
