The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Afghanistan, with the financial contribution from the Government of the Republic of Korea, will support women and girls in humanitarian settings in 2024 by combating gender-based violence through provision of high-quality services and essential commodities.

The uncertain political environment, economic decline, and limited engagement of the Taliban de facto authority with the international community have led to a severe breakdown in socioeconomic opportunities, resulting in increased poverty and challenges for the Afghan populace. In the midst of this turmoil, women's rights and gender equality have suffered, with constraints on personal freedoms, education, information access and economic prospects. These issues are closely related to the prevalent problem of gender-based violence, which disproportionately affects women and girls.

To address these concerns including the protracted conflict and humanitarian crises that have exacerbated gender inequality and gender-based violence in Afghanistan, UNFPA has been expanding its operations since 15 August 2021, in response to the increased demand for sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence or psychosocial support services. UNFPA has demonstrated leadership in the execution of integrated projects for the prevention and response to gender-based violence in Afghanistan.

The Government of the Republic of Korea with other donors will support UNFPA’s humanitarian efforts in addressing Afghanistan’s critical humanitarian requirements such as meeting the gender-based violence and psychosocial support care needs of women, boys and girls in the humanitarian setting in the country through the provision of gender-based violence and psychosocial support services, as well as provision of essential commodities and life-skills and vocational activities. Additionally the project will support adolescents and youth access to youth-friendly and reliable information on healthy lifestyles and PSS information and services.
