보이지 않는 사람들: 2022 세계인구현황보고서 : 의도하지 않은 임신으로 고통받는, 외면당한 사람들을 위한 행동
금년 세계인구현황 보고서 “보이지 않는 사람들: 의도하지 않은 임신으로 고통받는, 외면당한 사람들을 위한 행동 (Seeing the Unseen: The case for action in the neglected crisis of unintended pregnancy)”에 따르면, 매년 모든 임신의 거의 절반이 ‘의도하지 않은 임신’이라고 합니다. 보다 구체적으로, 2015-19년간 매년 약 1억 2,100만 건의 ‘의도하지 않은 임신(하루 평균 331,000건)’이 발생하였습니다. 전 세계적으로 피임을 원하는 여성으로 추정되는 약 2억 5,700만 명이 안전하고 현대적인 피임법을 사용하지 않고 있으며, 이 중 친밀한 파트너(intimate partner)로부터 폭력을 경험한 여성이 피임을 사용하는 비율이 53%나 낮은 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 이는 많은 여성이 여전히 남성의 성관계 요구를 거절할 수 없고, 자신의 성·재생산 건강에 대한 결정을 스스로 내릴 수 없음을 의미합니다. ‘의도하지 않은 임신’의 결과는 안전하지 않은 낙태(unsafe abortion)로 인한 산모사망과 같이 여성의 건강과 안전을 위태롭게 하며, 더 많은 낙태와 재정적 부담 등을 초래합니다.

For the first time, a United Nations report focuses on bodily autonomy: the power and agency to make choices about your body, without fear of violence or having someone else decide for you. This lack of bodily autonomy has massive implications beyond the profound harms to individual women and girls: potentially depressing economic productivity, undercutting skills, and resulting in extra costs to health care and judicial systems.
