About the event
Approximately two-thirds of the global population currently lives in countries with a total fertility rate (TFR) below the approximate replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman, and in several countries, especially in Southern, Eastern and Central Europe as well as East Asia, the TFR has reached levels of around 1.3 children per woman or below.
At the same time, at the individual level, there is a gap between desired and actual fertility, signalling an inability of people to realise their reproductive rights.
In this context, the 8th KOSTAT-UNFPA Global Symposium will focus on policy responses to low fertility. It will bring together academics, international organisations, the private sector, civil society, and policymakers to discuss the evidence and concrete examples for seven policy areas:
All discussions will be grounded in the concept of ‘demographic resilience’. UNFPA’s Demographic Resilience programme emphasises a shift from negative, reactive and fragmented responses to positive, anticipatory and integrated responses to demographic changes, while safeguarding individuals’ sexual and reproductive health and rights in line with the principles of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA).
